Amrit is the journey of two elderly and lonely people, both ill-treated by their children, who find solace in each other's company. Kamla (Smita Patil) is a widow living with her self-centred son and hostile daughter-in-law. She meets widower Amrit (Rajesh Khanna) when he brings his grandson to play at a park. Kamla then meets with an accident and Amrit goes to her house to meet her and realises how poorly she's being treated by her own family. Their shared plight brings them closer and they decide to separate from their respective families and spend the rest of their lives together. How will the society and their children react to their decision? Can Amrit and Kamala stand up against the accepted social norms?
