Preview:

Despite several high-profile absentees, England would look to make a positive start as they belatedly resume bilateral ties in Pakistan after 17 long years with a seven-match T20I series starting Tuesday (September 20) in Karachi.

Seven games in a bilateral arrangement is a luxury now, unprecedented even. Or an overcompensation as in this case, after England abruptly pulled out of making this trip last year. Nevertheless, it presents both these sides an extended opportunity to fine tune their plans for the T20 World Cup, due to begin in Australia next month.

England, though, may gain very little. The visitors were forced to name a refurbished squad with several of their first-choice players either recovering from injuries or resting back home ahead of the World Cup - Liam Livingstone, Ben Stokes, Chris Jordan and Jonny Bairstow among them. Of those who have made it, captain Jos Buttler continues to manage his Hundred-ending calf injury and will be confined to the dressing room at least for the Karachi leg of the series. Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, who've made it to the World Cup squad as well, are also returning from injuries too and would likely be sparingly used lest they aggravate it.

In the spotlight though will be the returning Alex Hales, who has merited a recall after more than three years in exile, and would walk straight into the XI replacing the axed opener Jason Roy.

For Pakistan, here's the opportunity to audition some batting reinforcements. They had been let down in Asia Cup opener against India because of a brittle - read, largely under-tested - middle-order and the 2021 semifinalists would want to address that gap. Shan Masood, after a breakthrough domestic season as well as English summer, has earned a debut opportunity in the shortest format while Haider Ali, who got the World Cup nod, would also be in line for some game time at some point over the course of these seven games.

When: Tuesday, September 20 at 7:30 PM local | 2:30 M GMT

Where: National Stadium Karachi

What to expect: Clear skies but a hot and humid day with temperature in the early 30s. The last T20I game played here saw over 400 runs being scored.

Team News

Pakistan: If the hosts decide to rest Mohammad Rizwan for the initial leg at least, both Mohammad Harris and Masood could get a chance in the top-three given that there's another vacancy created by Fakhar Zaman's injury.

Probable XI: Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Shan Masood, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Shahnawaz Dahani/Mohammad Hasnain

England: Recalled Hales will take up the opener's slot. Buttler's ongoing recovery means Moeen Ali will lead the side, and Phil Salt could don the keeping gloves.

Probable XI: Alex Hales, Phil Salt (wk), Dawid Malan, Harry Brook, Will Jacks, Moeen Ali (C), Sam Curran, Chris Wokaes, Adil Rashid, Richard Gleeson, Mark Wood/Reece Topley
